Dr. Andrea Serino

Andrea Serino is currently SNSF Professor at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Head of Neuroscience at MindMaze and Invited Professor at the Center for Neuroprosthetics of the EPFL. He got his PhD in Neuropsychology at the University of Bologna, where he was also assistant professor from 2006 to 2012. He was visiting scientist at University College London (2005) and invited professor at the University of Dijon (2010). His main research topic is understanding the neural and cognitive basis of body and self-experience in space. To this aim he has used multiple experimental techniques, both in healthy volunteers and in brain damaged patients, including psychophysics, non-invasive brain stimulation, fMRI, EEG and neural network modelling. Currently, he is working, together with MindMaze, on how to apply such knowledge to develop virtual reality applications for rehabilitation after neuronal damage. He has published several papers in international peer-reviewed journals, such as Neuron, Current Biology, Stroke, Brain. His research has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (CH), the European Commission, the Leenaards Foundation (CH), the Volkswagen Stiftung (Germany), the Bertarelli Foundation (CH), The Carigest (CH), the Italian Ministry of Research, the Cariplo Foundation (Italy), the Emilia Romagna region (Italy) and the British Academy (UK). He received in 2006 the De Renzi Prize from the Italian society of Neuropsychology and in 2016 the Leenaards Prize for translational research.
